Almost everyone in the world wants to write a book. 80% of the population thinks they have something important to say. And you know what? Everyone should be an author. Why? Because a book changes your life. And guess what? The 80% who are still out there wishing and dreaming of writing a book are not going to do it.  But you… you’re here, you showed up, you are reading this, and you’re interested. I applaud you.

And if you’re nervous, afraid, not sure how this your writing or becoming an author will unfold? Terrific, you’re in the right place. That is part of being an author – which is feeling the inspiration to write and also not being sure how your book will be written or come to be.

Your book is your pair of ruby slippers, like the ones Dorothy finally received and wore at the end of the “Wizard of Oz.”  All the little guys who answered the door when you knocked at The Wizard’s door in the past, and looked out the peephole and then told you “You’re not allowed in. The Wizard has no business with you.” Can now be a thing of the past. When your book is done, you knock on the door, and now he pulls back the peep hole, sees your book and says “Why that’s a horse of a different color! Come on in!” And you walk through the door and now you have access to the wonderful world of Emerald City, the land of a published author.

With your book, your very own customized ruby slippers, your book opens doors to editors, agents, publishers or self-publishing, being interviewed on radio or TV to talk about your book, networking opportunities, joint ventures and affiliate prospects, and speaking on stage or doing workshops. It all depends on what you want to create. It opens doors.

There are writers of all shapes, ages and colors who write books – all genres of books – children’s books, romance novels, coffee table books, graphic novels, business books, self-help books, memoirs, short stories, how-to’s, and more. All books have a reading audience.

Your hallmark to now become a writer – is the use of your imagination, plus a pen and paper or laptop.

Let’s get started on the idea of how to write.  There are two things you need to make this happen.

First you need commitment. Commitment to writing and doing your daily and weekly writing will set you apart from the other want to be authors, who dream about it and don’t ever do it.  Commitment to your process will help you achieve your aims with confidence.  Allow passion to join your commitment, with commitment to do the writing each week, your plans to be an author and write a book will turn into a bright reality.

Narrow down the specific topic you want to tackle in the book, specific topics might be:

  • Your life story in a memoir
  • A novel
  • Fiction, non-fiction
  • Employee engagement: how to communicate to employees to drive your business to success. Aimed at CEOs and corporate managers.
  • Easy gluten free and vegan dieting for weight loss and health. Aimed at busy women who have struggled with other diets and can’t spend a long time in the kitchen preparing food.
  • Sci FI
  • Romance Novel
  • Military history of the USA in the 20th century, and how that has shaped the current situation. Aimed at men who buy in the Military history category and intended to be the first in a series on US military history.
  • Adventure
  • Self Help
  • How to, etc.

Starting concepts can take many forms. You can have an idea for the book’s general plot; you can have an image of an environment, an outline for the main character, or even smaller, less developed ideas. It does not matter how rough it is, any idea can turn into a magnificent book.

Getting your book in a compilation is a great way to increase your visibility and the likelihood of you becoming a bestselling author. Indie authors who want to showcase their writing can contribute to flash fiction, to be compiled into a single book. These books are called anthologies and if you want to be a published author THIS YEAR, I am currently accepting only 25 writers to submit a story, and the resulting anthology will be published in Q3 of 2018.

An anthology is a collection of stories or, in this case, fiction or non-fiction essays that are collected together into a book. The essays or chapters are on a related topic —in this instance it’s a book about people who have experienced a difficult time, a trial of sorts, and came out the other side transformed. It is an inspirational book.

In the anthology model, the chapters stand alone, they’re written by different authors, and there will be an editor or a publisher (the promoter) who will bring the work together and publish it.

In an anthology, individual authors are expected to pay to contribute. This is pretty typical that there’s a fee to participate.  Anthologies like this in the business and personal development space are often self-published and there are very real costs involved for the editing, proof-reading, formatting, design, printing, etc, etc.

It is not unreasonable that the contributors will share that cost, just as you’d expect to pay those costs for your own self-published book. Book royalties are usually small, tiny even, and it’s unlikely the publisher will be making much, if any, money out of book sales. We don’t do the books for money, we do it for what the book will generate on the other side.

The idea is that the jointly authored content will bring something of greater value into the world, and to the readers.

A literary anthology is a wondrous mix of stories from several contributors that offers readers two very unique things: the chance to dive into some shorter fiction (for those daily transportation rides), and the opportunity to enjoy work from new writers!
